A fundraiser hoodie done well can raise serious money for a school or club while producing something students or members genuinely want. Done poorly, it raises less than expected and leaves the organiser stuck with unsold stock. The difference usually comes down to four decisions: fabric, fit, colour, and price.

Fabric: the decision that determines everything else

The hoodie market in Australia sits in two broad camps: budget fleece and midweight-to-premium fleece. For a fundraiser, the fabric choice drives your cost per unit, your sell price, and — critically — how enthusiastically your audience orders.

Budget fleece (200–250gsm): Lighter, thinner, less substantial. Costs less per unit, so your margin can look attractive on paper. But students and parents can feel the difference. A thin hoodie at $45 feels like a rip-off; the same thin hoodie at $30 barely funds anything. Budget fleece is appropriate if cost is the dominant constraint, but it limits what you can charge.

Midweight fleece (280–320gsm): The sweet spot for fundraiser hoodies. Substantial enough to justify a $55–$65 retail price, comfortable enough to actually be worn regularly, and durable enough to last more than one season. Most AS Colour and comparable mid-tier blanks sit in this range. This is where most successful school fundraiser hoodies are.

Heavyweight fleece (350gsm+): Premium. Usually associated with brand labels and streetwear. The per-unit cost is higher but so is the perceived value — you can realistically price these at $70–$80 and the buyer feels they're getting a quality product. Best for Year 12 leavers' hoodies where the product has sentimental value and budget is less of a constraint.

Fit: get this wrong and sales suffer

Fit is the most underrated factor in fundraiser hoodie success. Students, in particular, have strong preferences about how their hoodies fit — and a boxy, shapeless hoodie in the wrong cut will see lower uptake than a better-fitting alternative.

The two main fit types to understand:

Unisex/relaxed fit: Wider body, dropped shoulder, longer length. Currently very popular in the oversized streetwear aesthetic. Works well for Year 12 hoodies where a relaxed, casual look is desirable. This style typically runs large — size down if you're not sure.

Standard/fitted: More tailored through the body and sleeve. Better for mixed-audience orders where you want a single style to fit both male and female bodies reasonably well. Some blanks offer separate men's and women's cuts — this is the best outcome but doubles the complexity of your size run.

When in doubt, order a sample before committing to your full run. Most decorators can supply a blank for sizing. This single step prevents more size-run regrets than anything else.

Colour: let your audience choose

The biggest mistake in fundraiser hoodie colour selection: one person on the committee choosing a colour the students don't actually want. A quick online vote — even just a Google Form — takes five minutes and eliminates this problem.

Popular colours for Australian school and club fundraiser hoodies include navy, black, forest green, and burgundy (for more traditional environments) and bone/off-white, sage, and dusty pink (for more contemporary audiences). Bright colours — red, royal blue, yellow — can work with the right design but are polarising.

If you're unsure, navy is the safest option and almost always performs well. It works with most school or club colour schemes and photographs well.

Building your profit margin

Here's a straightforward margin calculation framework for a fundraiser hoodie:

  1. Get a quote for your confirmed quantity (from your pre-order)
  2. Calculate your total cost including blank, decoration, freight, and any artwork setup fees
  3. Divide by the number of units to get your cost per unit
  4. Set your sell price at cost per unit + desired margin per unit

At 50 units on a midweight hoodie with screen printing or embroidery, your cost per unit including everything might be $35–$45. A sell price of $60–$65 gives you $15–$25 per unit — $750–$1,250 on a 50-unit run. That's meaningful money for a club or school without requiring an enormous amount of stock.

Year 12 leavers' hoodies on premium blanks with individual name printing can command $70–$80 and still sell every unit — the sentimental and social value drives purchase intent regardless of price.

Common fundraiser hoodie mistakes

  • Not pre-ordering before committing to a quantity
  • Under-ordering mediums and larges
  • Choosing fabric based on cost without considering perceived value
  • Not factoring freight into the cost-per-unit calculation
  • Leaving too little time for artwork approval and production
